You are a social worker in a high school. You have a 16 year old Caucasian client, Samuel. You have been meeting with Samuel for two weeks. His parents have reached out to you in concern about his current situation. Samuel has been struggling in his Junior year. They state he has become very withdrawn. He recently broke up with his girlfriend, and his grades are dropping considerably. His parents state that he just comes home and plays on his video games for most of the night. He has trouble waking up early enough to get to school. He has skipped school and slept most of the day. His parents have found marijuana and alcohol in his room. He is a great basketball player on his high school’s team, but his grades have dropped to the point where he may not be able to join the team in the spring. You meet with Samuel and talk with him about the concerns. He admits that he sometimes feels that “life is not that fun anymore.” He states that he feels “numb” and just “doesn’t care” like he used to. He admits to thinking about ending it all. When asked to elaborate on those thoughts, he states that he would just pull his car in the garage, shut the door and turn on the car to just “go to sleep and not wake up.”
