Here is an example of a model of practice. Its theory Virginia Henderson: Often called “the Nightingale of Modern Nursing,” Henderson was a noted nursing educator and author. Her “Need Theory” was based in practice and her education. She emphasized the importance of increasing a client’s independence to promote their continued healing progress after hospitalization. Her definition of nursing was one of the first to mark the difference between nursing and medicine. “The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will, or knowledge. Characteristic 1: Within every cultural group, there is a broad range of healing practices, traditions and beliefs.

Since human beings, including nurses, may consciously or unconsciously impose their cultural value systems on others due to notions of superiority, nurses must bridge the gap between professional and traditional care so as to attain a culturally congruent care. In my advanced nursing practice, I would use this concept as a way of minimizing the influence of my cultural beliefs and values in providing quality and efficient services for patients. Recognizing the unique cultural background of the patient would help enhance the potential for providing a culturally congruent care that renders quality health care outcomes (Leininger & McFarland, 2006).
