Discrimination based on race was common between the 16th and 18th century. The great migration of Africans to work as slaves led to the upsurge in black people living in a country that was purely dominated by Red Indians. There were social classes with the whites completely segregated from the blacks who worked as their slaves (Guess, 2006). With time, although some of the Red Indians intermarried with the Africans, there was still segregation of people of color.
