Articulate the advantages and disadvantages of the North and South at the outset of the Civil War.

With the advent of the war, both sides had to consider their military and economic strengths and weaknesses. While the North did have some overwhelming advantages, the South also had benefits it could rely on. However, the question remained: were these advantages enough to see the Confederacy through to a successful ending of the war?

Using the reading as evidence, consider the following in a post of at least 250 words:

  • What were the military and economic advantages and disadvantages of each side going into the war?

The North was much more industrialized. The manufacturing power gave them an advantage in war capability because they could produce firearms way much more than the South. Unlike the south who depended on slaves for labor in their farms, Northerners Agriculture was mechanized, and by 1860s, they were competing the South significantly in cotton production and even outcompeted them in other crops production such as wheat, corn, and oats. Industrialization had boosted urbanization in the North. A lot of people moved to live in the Northern cities giving the North a population advantage with approximately twenty-three million people compared to only nine million in the South. The Northern Free States had also attracted Europeans. The Unions economy developed a lot during the war opposed to the South that was first crippled by……..
