Watch the film “Murder on a Sunday Morning” detailing the story of Brenton Butler (available through YouTube or iTunes, to name a few).

  1. What ‘approach’ was used in the interrogation process?
  2. Discuss whether the suspect was an ’emotional’ or ‘non-emotional’ offender.
  3. Discuss the concept of ‘false confessions’ as it relates to this case. Do you believe there was a false confession involved in this case?
  4. Why do you believe the detectives never considered anyone else as a suspect in this case? Do you believe this is common?

Directed by Jean-Xavier in 2001, Murder on A Sunday Morning is a French documentary film that depicts the case of Brenton Butler, a fifteen-year-old Black American who got falsely accused of a murder he didn’t commit. The plot instigates from the murder of an old lady, a tourist from Georgia who got killed by a Black assailant. It outlines how the lawyers from the Public Defenders’ Office worked on the case to prove Butler’s innocence and that the detectives remained incompetent. The interrogation process took the approach of torture where he got both physically and psychologically threatened and racially abused (Delisi, 2009). Butler is an emotional offender because he experiences guilt and responds to the emotional approaches as he forcefully admits being guilty. False confession involves the situation where the offender admits being guilty of a crime he didn’t commit. In this case, Butler made a false confession when he admits and signed that he was the one who committed the crime though forcefully……….
