Annotated Bibliography

Annotated bibliographies are properly-formatted lists of sources that include brief summaries of the sources. They are especially important when you’re working on a research paper, of any kind, as a way to catalog and keep track of the material you’re collecting.

But a standard annotated bibliography doesn’t give you a chance to begin thinking about the relationship the sources have to one another, or the work each of them will do for your essay.

Create a properly-formatted list of Works Cited (MLA format), and for each source write a brief (4-5 sentence) paragraph that includes the following information:

  • A summary of the main idea or argument of the source that is important for your essay;
  • A characterization of the approach or methodology of the source;
  • A reflection on how you expect to use the source in your essay, perhaps in terms of the Vocabulary; perhaps in terms of the Strategies for Source-Use that we will generate together in class.

Remember that you need to use one source from the text groupings and one from outside research.
