INTRODUCTION

The impact that Sir Charles Darwin has had on how we understand the world today has been huge, to say the least. For this discussion, you will read Darwin’s final concluding chapter of his famous book, On the Origin of Species (1859), and assess his contributions. Of particular note is that he and Alfred Russel Wallace arrived at the mechanism of natural selection without the knowledge of genetics.

RESEARCH

  1. On the origin of species by means of natural selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life. London: Murray. [1st ed.]
  1. Read the Conclusions chapter (pp. 480-490) of Darwin’s Originsbook you downloaded, which starts at the last paragraph on page 480.
  2. Review the materials in your textbook on the concept of natural selection and the contributions made by Darwin, Wallace, and Mendel (Chapter 2-Lavenda & Schultz). Make sure you understand Mendel’s principles.

DISCUSSION

Answer the following questions for your initial discussion post. Label your responses according to each of the numbered questions since it facilitates reading for everyone. All work must be your own.

  1. Summary of Darwin’s Concluding Chapter

How does Darwin conclude his huge book? Write a summary of at least a few paragraphs, in your own words, that successfully captures the essence of his conclusions.

2.Darwin’s Contributions

Discuss in detail at least 3 of Darwin’s contributions to evolutionary theory. Provide specifics about each of the contributions.

3.What Darwin Didn’t Know: Genetics

If Darwin had known about inheritance, surmise as to how his explanation of natural selection may have been significantly different. Discuss at least 3 specific ways and provide details for each. Be sure to explicitly discuss Mendel’s principles of inheritance.

preview of the answer..

The Origin of Species is a work on biology that challenges most of the perceptions that people commonly had about the field (Lavenda & Schultz, 2015). In particular, Darwin refutes the notion that all species on Earth were created by God individually. Instead, he explains that species evolved to lead to other species through a process of change. In the final concluding chapter of the Origin of Species, Darwin recapitulates his natural selection concept and recaps the main parts of his evidence and arguments. He states that he had tried his best to explain issues such as hybrid infertility..
