- Response post 1
- Apply strategies for safe, effective multidimensional nursing practice when providing care for clients with neurological disorders
- .I achieved this competency by learning more about the nervous system and understanding the disease process. I could apply this knowledge to determine which specific disorder is based on clinical manifestations. I was able to differentiate between left-sided and right-sided strokes based on the manifestations and the importance of immediate care.
- Outline appropriate nursing strategies for providing care to perioperative clients. This course has prepared me to provide nursing care during periop that begins when the patient is placed on the surgical schedule and continues through the surgical suite and post-surgical care. The client must have a comprehensive medical history, physical examination, and a list of drugs. Client safety is paramount regardless of whether surgery is performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis. I learned the importance of a comprehensive surgical checklist. I learned that the Time-Out is one of the most critical measures that has become common practice.
- Compare nursing interventions for clients with complex disorders.I could demonstrate this skill by recognizing the signs and symptoms of complex illnesses and using the nursing process to plan and implement care for these patients using airway, breathing, circulation, disability, and exposure. I can tell the difference between critical findings in a burn patient, such as the extent of tissue destruction and any respiratory issues. This new information will impact my future profession since it will help me apply my critical thinking abilities to treat patients correctly in a critical care scenario.
- Identify strategies for safe nursing practice of the client with multisystem organ failure.I acquired this skill through studying multisystem organ failure (MODS). Due to fatal medical disorders that disrupt the body’s internal regulating mechanisms, two or more organs are not working properly in MODS. Nursing care is crucial in multisystem organ care to help restore normal functioning by determining and treating the cause. To help implement an appropriate treatment plan, nurses must assess and evaluate the patient, according to what I’ve learned
- .Prioritize nursing interventions for clients with medical emergencies.Understanding how to apply the nursing process and care for each particular emergency helped me accomplish my course competency. During a medical emergency, I’ve honed the skill of prioritization by following the ABCs for my treatment. Nurses are part of the interprofessional team of first responders during a disaster. This education has made me realize how important nurses are in disaster response. Nurses work in the disaster response unit of healthcare organizations. In this course, I learned that a nurse’s role in a disaster is assisting victims, provide emergency medications, and providing first aid. I’ve learned that nurses also educate the general public on how to respond during a crisis
- .Summarize the nurse’s role and care strategies for clients during disasters.I gained this skill by realizing that the role played in each crisis might range from triage to being a part of the response. In both natural and man-made disasters, I can now use the nursing procedure and provide care. I’ll familiarize myself with my facility’s protocol and prepare for any disaster. Using tier triage, primary survey, and the knowledge that a patient is too critical of a condition may not be the first to receive care after a disaster.

- Apply strategies for safe, effective multidimensional nursing practice when providing care for clients with neurological disorders.
- I achieved this competency by understanding that the nervous system consists of two parts; the Central Nervous System (CNS), consisting of the brain and spinal cord, and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) which is made up of all the nerves in the body outside of the CNS. I was able to transfer this new knowledge gained into skill by determining which neurological symptom belonged to the CNS or PNS to understand the disease process of each specific disorder. Understanding the anatomy and physiology of each system was laid out and being able to prioritize the evidenced-based care for each system is a priority skill that I have gained. I will transfer this new knowledge gained to be able to prioritize my patient care based on their specific neurological symptoms, and understand the implications of misdiagnosis, and not providing a through neurological exam
- .Outline appropriate nursing strategies for providing care to perioperative clients.
- I achieved this competency by gaining a full understanding of the difference in my nursing duties between pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative and being able to critically think through each stage on what my priority task is. I gained the critical knowledge of pre-op instructions such as NPO, my duties that relate to informed consent, intra-operative asepsis, the complications of general anesthesia, and priority post-op interventions such as monitoring for hypo/hypervolemic shock. I will use this new knowledge in my practice to ensure that I am diligent about the steps of care given in each stage; being able to critically think through the complications of each stage and subsequently apply the appropriate interventions to each complication. Using “A.B.C.” as my guide to all perioperative clients
- .Compare nursing interventions for clients with complex disorders.
- I met this competency by being able to identify the signs and symptoms of complex disorders and apply the nursing process to both plan and implement care for these patients using “A.B.C” as my guide. I am able to distinguish between the different complex respiratory disorders, and how to manage a patient with mechanical ventilation. I also am able to distinguish between critical findings in a patient with burns determining their level of tissue damage as well as respiratory complications that have occurred. This new knowledge will impact my future practice by allowing me to use my critical thinking skills gained to correctly treat patients in a critical care setting.
- Identify strategies for safe nursing practice of the client with multi-system organ failure.
- I achieved this competency by understanding the progression of MODS and the critical findings these patients. I will understand the importance of delivering specific treatment for each individual organ; such as hemodynamic support for heart dysfunction. I will anticipate the needs of these clients and prepare for treatments that will likely be ordered. I will also treat each individual organ system as its own disease and not as a whole; anticipating the needs. I will use this in future practice my acknowledging the complexity of MODS and supporting the families of those in distress.
- Prioritize nursing interventions for clients with medical emergencies.
- I achieved this competency by understanding how to apply the nursing process and implement care for each individual emergency. I am able to distingue care from pre-and peri hospital care for patients who are experiencing a medical emergency. I have gained the skill of prioritization during a medical emergency always using A.B.C for my cares in an emergency. #1; protecting the clients airway! I will use this competency by taking into effect the interdisciplinary care of clients in the ER; such as, forensic nurse examiners, psychiatric crisis nurses, and EMTs. I will keep staff and client’s safety and the top of my mind when giving care in an emergent situation surveying the area before I begin care. I will acknowledge the high risk of medical errors in an emergent situation and ensure to never skip the steps of checking for allergy alerts, medical alerts, searching for drug paraphernalia, and always following my medication administration checks
- .Summarize the nurse’s role and care strategies for clients during disasters.
- I achieved this competency by understanding that the role in each individual disaster can greatly vary from triage to being part of the response. I am now able to apply the nursing process and implement care in both and natural and man-made disaster. I understand that while it is not possible to practice every type of disaster, I will familiarize myself with my facility protocol and know how to find the answers. I will prioritize care at a disaster site using tier triage and understanding that the most critical patient may not be my first to give care to during a disaster, but rather a black tag may be used.
