Approach to Essay Writing

This week, you continue writing your journal entries. This journal is designed to give you practice in academic writing, which is very different from the personal essay writing that you have been practicing. Academic writing entails making a point and supporting that point with information from a reputable source. There are three ways to support a point with information from a source: quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing. This week, you will practice paraphrasing a source and citing that source in your journal entry. Please be sure to read and review the “Example Journal Entry – Paraphrasing” document, which describes how to integrate quotations.

Please note that the journal assignment should not be confused with a personal journal. This activity requires organization, effective stylistics and grammar, and proper source incorporation. It is not a free-writing or reflective writing exercise.

Both of the personal essays we have read this week, “How to Say Nothing in 500 Words” and “Life Under the Chief Doublespeak Officer,”use narrative and/or descriptive elements (sections 6.3 and 6.4 in the text), and each has a clear purpose. Choose one of the essays assigned this week to write about.  In 250 to 500 words:

  1. State the purpose of the essay.
  2. Describe one literary element being used in the essay (refer to sections 6.3 and 6.4 in the text).
  3. Explain why you think that literary element is used well by the writer.
  4. Incorporate a paraphrase from the essay. Cite the essay.
  5. Explain how you plan to use the literary element in your personal essay.

As you are writing this journal entry, please pay attention to the areas that you struggled with in your “Grammar Assessment” quiz and “Practice Essay” assignment.

When submitting your journal entry, make sure to:

  1. Proofread your work for errors in grammar, mechanics, and style.
  2. Format the journal according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Refer to the Ashford Writing Center’sSample APA Title Page for guidelines on formatting a title page in APA style.
  3. Provide an in text citation for the section of the essay you paraphrase. Refer to the Ashford Writing Center’s Comprehensive APA Reference List Models for guidelines on in text citations in APA style.
  4. Provide a reference for the essay you paraphrase. Refer to the Ashford Writing Center’s Citation and Reference Guide for guidelines on citing sources in APA style.
  5. Perform a word count check to make sure the journal is 250 to 500 words in length.
  6. Save the document as a Microsoft Word or compatible .doc or .docx file.
  7. Use a naming convention that includes your last name, week number, and the assignment number (e.g., smith_w2_a1.doc).

Before submitting your journal, you may want to visit the Ashford Writing Center (AWC) for feedback. The AWC has two kinds of tutoring available to you:

  • Live Chat – If you have writing-related questions about a topic before you draft a discussion post or submit a written assignment, you will now be able to chat live with a tutor for up to 20 minutes. • Email Paper Review – If you have a draft, partial draft, or are just having trouble getting started, you can complete a submission form and email your paper to the AWC for review.
    • Writing tutors will do their best to return your paper with their comments within 48 hours, not including Saturdays and Sundays. Please plan accordingly if you would like to receive feedback before an assignment due date.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your journal entries.

Writing is not a hobby to many individuals. As such, there are many who view writing assignments given by teachers as a punishment. Positive attitude and the right approach to writing are the key factors towards writing a good essay.

By the use of a narrative literary element, Paul Roberts, in his essay “How to Say Nothing in 500 Words” explains how one can come up with an ideal essay in no time.
