Infections or obstruction of the appendix causes rapid multiplication of the bacteria living within the appendix. Multiplication of bacteria causes inflammation of the appendix since it will be full of pus, a thick liquid that contains bacteria, tissue debris and dead cells. The infection causes pressure inside the appendix to increase quickly. Continuous increase in pressure decreases the amount of blood that flows through the appendix’s walls (ePainAssist, 2019). The healthy white blood cells making up the appendix tissues will then be starved to death. This process will continue until one of the muscular walls of the appendix becomes thin and breaks. The opening will allow the pus from the appendix to leak out and spread into other parts of the abdomen.
