Assume a cryptographic algorithm

Alice, Bob, and Carol want to use secret key cryptography to authenticate each other. Compare the security of having a single shared secret that they all share, with the security of having each of them use their own secret (Alice authenticates to either Bob or Carol by proving knowledge of KA, Bob with KB, and Carol with KC).

> Assume a cryptographic algorithm that is linear in the length of the key to perform “good guy operations,” e.g., encryption, decryption, key generation, integrity check generation, and integrity check verification; and that it is exponential in the length of the key to perform “bad guy operations,” e.g., brute force breaking.

Preview of the answer..

The security of having a single shared secret, with the security of having each one of parties use their own secret is incomparable, in sense that the single shared secret is not a secret to the all the parties involved. This means that any among the parties involved can single himself out and interfere with the rest of the secret in the sense that, he may mess up around bearing in mind that, no one can identify exactly who might have messed them up. This is not a good security because the secret is not secure even to the holders of the secret whereas, the security of having each of the secret holders having their own secret..
