Project Management

WEEK 10 DISCUSSION

  • You have now delivered the project to your customer ahead of schedule but slightly over budget. Now it is time to reflect on what went well and what didn’t go so well. Based on feedback throughout the course, what would you have done differently in terms of scope, resources, and/or schedule, and why?
  • After posting your response, respond to at least one of your classmates on their recommendations.

Here is the discussion that you have to reply

Hello everyone,

The watch tower has been a rocky project with many difficulties along the way. The project’s sponsor was not well informed about the project’s needs and it was reflected in their push for a shorter schedule and smaller budget. This is the first area I would apply some changes to in a future endeavor. The scope and project plan, including estimated schedule and budget, needed to be presented to the sponsor much more clearly. Full buy-in on the schedule and budget are extremely important and a better presentation of this to the sponsor may have alleviated some of the stresses experienced during the project. With a lower budget and a shorter schedule, the scope for the project had to be reduced. This changed the functionality of the project and potentially damaged the project’s purpose in the first place. Many aspects of the tower were vital to the purpose and it would difficult to reduce scope without reducing functionality. It is not unreasonable to believe the project may not have been undertaken at all by the project’s sponsor if it had been known how much the project’s scope would have to be reduced by the project’s end. While work on the tower and project planning went according to revised plans, the overall impression of the project is not one of success, and this all hinges on the failure of the sponsor to grasp the schedule and budget of the project.

The presentation at the beginning of the project needed to include the importance of the schedule and budget and why these could not be easily changed without having a substantial impact on the project’s scope. The impact on the scope should have been explained to the project’s sponsor and then a better decision about whether or not to undertake the project could have been made.
