The demise of Prophet Muhammad led to a political scramble among the companions of the Prophet on whom will be the next leader of the Islamic community. Since Ali was the youngest of the companions the elderly individuals of the Quraish led by Abubakar, Umar and Uthman established the leadership among themselves on the next successor after the Prophet.
The split between the Sunni and Shia Islam began after the death of Prophet Muhammad and the group led by Abubakar from the Quraish engaged in a fraudulent election to determine who would be the first Khalifa of Islam. Ali who came from the Hashem family saw himself as the rightful Khalifa to succeed Muhamad since he was brought up in the Prophet home and also married the Prophet daughter Fatimah. Sunni being the majority of Islam against the Shia passed leadership of the Islamic community to Abubakar who was one of the closest companions to Prophet Muhammad. The Shia, on the other hand, believed that Abubakar was not supposed to be the first Khalifa and Ali should be the one leading the Islamic community forward……..
