In the recent past, around 26 states have legalized the use of marijuana at least to some degree. The surge in the states legalizing marijuana agrees with the increased support of the public to the decriminalization of the substance. Examples of the states include Colorado and Washington. Nevertheless, the drug still remains classified under the federal laws as a Schedule one substance (Strobbe, 2014). Therefore, according to the federal laws, marijuana is a controlled substance and it is therefore a criminal offense to be in possession, selling, using or manufacturing the substance.
