The world’s environmental problems have risen to the level of major crisis. As such, environmental destruction is the most devastating crisis faced by people globally. Currently, there is so much destruction being done in all aspects of the environment that global ecosystems are continually degraded. The severe effects of environmental destruction can be noted ranging from ocean acidification to chemical pollution. Besides, extreme weather conditions have been experienced at a greater frequency. Notably, what is often omitted in the diagnosis of these environmental hazards is the dynamics of capitalism as a global economic system and its impact on the environment. The significant effect of the capitalist economy on the environment has been sidelined by environmental scientists and ecologists who assert that overexploitation of the natural resources and overpopulation as the driving forces behind the environmental crisis (Sweezy, 2009). Significantly, pro-capitalists state that capitalism cannot be responsible for environmental destruction as it has a better track record compared to socialism.
