For this topic, I chose a podcast from Gimlet Creative called: Science Vs. Their latest podcast covers the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and the hype surrounding it. respond to a peer on discussion board – pathogenic microbiologyThe podcast is
narrated by Wendy Zuckerman, who goes searching for answers to commonly asked
questions and rumors about this new virus. I chose this podcast because I listen to Science Vs.
on a regular basis and love the way they relay information.
In this podcast, Wendy talks with Dr. Hui, a doctor that first dealt with the virus in Wuhan,
China. The beginning is spent with Wendy asking him what it was like working at “ground-
zero” and what caused all of the mayhem. Dr. Hui describes the virus as flu-like with
symptoms getting worse as time goes on. Dr. Hui mentioned that it probably came from the
local wet market. But … the majority of people showing up at the hospital had never visited
the wet market!
A study, mentioned in the episode, showed that the virus was originally in bats. However, an
“intermediate host” kind of like a middle man is infected and then the virus is transmitted to
humans via droplet.
Another topic, out of many, discussed was the use of masks and their efficacy when it comes
to protection. Turns out, they’re not that helpful!
