3.4 – Deconstruction Essay Assignment Description
The Essay Assignment
Welcome to your Unit 3 essay assignment description. This essay will be another out-of-course essay like your New Criticism essay. It will need to be a minimum of 6 pages and/or 1900 words (minimum; not including the works cited list) in order to accommodate what will essentially be two separate readings (or more) of the same poem. To match the assignment, I’ve written a fairly long and detailed description of its different parts below (it’s my one last chance to tell you how Deconstruction works).
* Please note: The assigned Szymborska poem this unit is NOT available as a text to write your essay on – you’ll need to research your own poetry or song to read, listen to and deconstruct for the unit essay.
The essay structure should go like this:
- Introduction with poem summary and essay thesis – 1 paragraph
- Detailed description of Deconstruction – 1-2 paragraphs
- Close reading of a poem or song of your choice – 2-3 pages
- Deconstruction of the same poem or song – 2-3 pages
- Conclusion – 1 paragraph
