You are HR Director for Huawei China.

YOUR TASK: Your boss, CEO of Huawei,(China) has informed you that one of his senior engineers, Mr Wang Chunkan, will be sent on a one-year overseas assignment in FRANCE beginning in June. Mr Wang will manage a team of 20 staff in the new job. All 20 of his employees will be from France. Mr Wang is 50 years old and an expert in his field. He is fluent in the language of the host country but has never lived there before. You asked him to read the Harvard Business Review’s “Cultural Intelligence” article and to take the CQ test. His scores were very low — 2 in cognitive, physical and emotional CQ. While meeting with him, he expressed ethnocentric views, such as stating that Chinese culture is most advanced in the world and Chinese food is best in the world. However, he wants to advance his career and to succeed in this overseas assignment.

Part 1: Use the learnings from “Navigating the Cultural Minefield” and Culture(country) Mapping to predict the top 3 areas of challenges Mr Wang will face in his new job in. Compare the differences between China and France. Prepare a 4- week training (1 class per week) for him to follow 2 months before leaving China. Explain what the training will cover in Class 1, 2, 3 and 4. (100-word overview to explain why these topics have been chosen, then 50-word description for each class. 300 words total)

Use principles explained in the Cultural Intelligence article. (100 words to describe a plan covering each of the 3 areas, 300 words total)

Part 4: Conclusion: Use the Development Model of Intercultural Sensitivity to explain why it will be important for Mr Wang to advance along the spectrum from ethno-centrism to ethno-relativism in order to succeed in this new assignment. (200 words)
