HSTM 4423—Initial Topic Selection and Brief Justification

Point Value: 25 points

Assignment: Students will be responsible for completing the first step in a four-part final presentation. The first step consists of selecting an issue that is currently relevant to the hospitality industry. Introductory research of various topics should be completed prior to the selection of the topic to determine its value and worth to classroom contribution.

The topic should not be one of the following topics–if you submit a topic relatively close to any of these topics, it will not be approved for future research: safety while traveling, big data, shared economy, tipping practices, sustainable F&B, brand and design trends, human trafficking, natural disasters, employee recruitment and retention, technology vs. customer service, and corporate social responsibility.

Assignment Instructions: Find an issue related to the hospitality industry that you believe should be discussed and further explored this semester. Provide a brief justification for why you feel this topic is of importance.

Your topic must be approved by the instructor before June 21st before you will be permitted to continue with future research and the other parts of the assignment. Failure to obtain topic approval will result in a 25 point penalty from your final project grade.

Due to the presentations being shared with classmates and information included on the final exam, topics will not be duplicated. Therefore, topics will be approved on a “first come, first serve” basis when claiming a topic.

Paper Guidelines:

  • Length of your paper should be between 200-300 words in length
  • Written using APA formatting—Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, include page numbers in the top right corner and running header with your name (you do not need to include a cover page for this submission)
  • Please make sure that you include citations (both in-text and in the reference list)
    • If you submit this assignment without the use of any references, I will NOT approve your topic selection as you have not academically justified your choice.
  • Make sure to proofread your work!
  • Assignment will be submitted as a Word document to Canvas.
