INTRODUCTION

The archaeological record is a non-renewable resource. While some sites are well preserved, many others are in severe danger of being lost forever. Some of these threatened sites belong to the larger UNESCO World Heritage List. As of June 2016, this list “includes 1031 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value.” (quote fromhttp://whc.unesco.org/en/list/ (接到外部网站。)).

Archaeological sites such as Cahokia in the USA, Tikal in Guatemala, Mahabalipuram in India, the Great Pyramids of Egypt and numerous others hold the World Heritage designation. While all sites face difficulties, not all are on the Endangered List, so we’ll concentrate on the sites in the direst situations (see URL below). (Natural formations are also on the list, such as the Grand Canyon in the USA, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, and Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries of China, but we’ll focus our attention on only the archaeological sites for this exercise. Do not use natural formations as they will not count for credit.)

RESEARCH

  2. Choose one of the archaeological sites on the “List of World Heritage in Danger” from this website:

http://whc.unesco.org/en/danger/ (接到外部网站。). Make sure your choice is an archaeological designated as a “Cultural site” and not a natural site. (No credit for natural sites.)

The Bamiyan Valley is located in the region of Hazarajat, central Afghanistan, in a large tectonic basin, about 50km long and 15km wide, at an altitude of 2,500m, surrounded by the Hindu-Kush mountain range rising to 4,000-5,000m in Afghanistan.
