Cultural Relativity in Machiavelli’s The Prince and Montaigne’s “Of Cannibals”

Textual Analysis Unit 3—

Step 1: Choose TWO of the following texts from Unit 3 to write about:

Cervantes’s Don Quixote
Montaigne’s “To the Reader” and/or “Of Cannibals” Machiavelli’s The Prince

Step 2: Choose ONE of the following topics to guide your reading of the texts you chose in step 1:

Imagination Cultural Relativity Renaissance Humanism or Conflict and Growth

(Keep in mind that these topics can be interpreted in any number of ways—I’m looking for you to explain your own particular focus on the topic in relation to the two texts you choose.)

Step 3: Title your paper—You will title your paper simply using the two texts and the topic you chose. For example:

Imagination in Machiavelli’s The Prince and Montaigne’s “Of Cannibals”

(Note how the title is centered with no bolding or italics, except for the titles of the texts.)

Step 4: Writing the paper itself. As you read, take careful notes on the texts to help you interpret them and find appropriate quotations to support your claims.

When this is all done, your paper should be at least 2.5 pages. The best papers are usually at least 3 pages. Very thoroughly explained papers might reach to the bottom of the fourth page. Please don’t make your paper longer than 4 pages.

Is any society better than another and is anyone to be judged to be evil by others? These questions and many others surrounding cultural relativism have been asked over time and they have been used frequently in the society in different fields. Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince and Michel de Montaigne’s Of Cannibals present a common theme of cultural relativism in judgments that people make regarding others and other communities. Machiavelli delivered rather controversial advice regarding a prince’s approach to power by advising that they should capitalize on the evil nature of humans to serve their interests while all along appearing moral. On the other hand, De Montaigne questioned the cultural superiority of Europeans and indeed compared them it to the cannibal communities of Brazil. In The Prince and Of Cannibals, the authors praise cultural relativism and advocate for societies and individuals to judge others based on the internal view of their culture………..
