Discussion Question:

Define and distinguish the terms ‘theoretical framework’ and ‘conceptual framework.’ Next, select a peer-reviewed journal article that provides the theoretical framework or conceptual framework. Provide a brief discussion of the framework in a paragraph. Address the relationship among the components of the framework and evaluate how the theoretical structures were expanded from/to the literature review/problem statements; how the conceptual framework was expanded from/to the theoretical perspectives; and/or how the research question(s)/research hypotheses were driven from the conceptual framework. In addition, at the end of the initial post please pose an actual question or questions that occurred to you while reading the article.

Response 1:

A conceptual framework is the aggregate, sensible direction and relationship of everything that shapes the hidden reasoning, structures, plans and practices and execution of a research. Specifically, a conceptual framework consists of one’s understandings on description of the research topic, the issue to be explored, inquiries, the literature review, the theories to be applied, the strategy one will utilize, methodology and instruments, the analysis and translation of discoveries, and the suggestions one will make.

A theoretical structure is basically a sub-set of the conceptual framework. It includes the theories of other scholars in the field, the means of which one can hold or support the theory of the research, and the understanding of the outcomes. Consequently, the theoretical framework sums up ideas and theories, which one will create from recently tested and published knowledge which to incorporate in assisting with having a theoretical foundation, or premise of the data gathered and understanding of the importance contained in the research data.

The article I chose was by Kuo (2014). The article aimed to compile, review, and examine cumulative cross-cultural psychological research that sheds light on the relationships among coping, acculturation, and psychological and mental health outcomes for migrants. The author utilizes the conceptual framework by differentiating of learning a new culture versus the stress, coping, and adaption associated with that culture. The cultural learning model supposes that cultural adaptation occurs through migrants’ learning of culture-specific skills that would enable them to negotiate their ways in the new cultural environment. Under this framework, the emphasis is placed on teaching and training migrants or newcomers new knowledge, new language, and new intercultural skills. In contrast, the stress, coping, and cultural adaptation model has been argued to be a more flexible explanatory framework to discern acculturation because it can address acculturating individuals’ responses to conflicts and stresses arising from intercultural contacts. The question I have after reading all this article, should the immigration process be kept at its present level, increase or decrease?

Response 2:

Theoretical and Conceptual frameworks hold many things in common, they provide the author and the reader a blueprint and structure to the research that makes it easy to follow and understand. Theoretical frameworks are build off certain theories such as the theory of relativity. The author uses this theory to then guide the purpose, results and other sections of the study. The theory that is chosen will impact how the author views the problem and how they are conducting the study to understand it more thoroughly. The conceptual framework can be thought of as the end result of bringing together multiple theories and/or concepts. If the theoretical framework is the starting point the Conceptual framework grants the author the ability to opine that one theory or concept does not fully encapsulate or explain the problem. A larger net must be cast and the framework of this net is called the conceptual framework.

The two frameworks compliment each other and in sciences such as social science where situations and problems may not fit into a single theory it is necessary to expand and that is done through the conceptual framework. If you think of the classification of a fossil, the theory of evolution can be applied along with taxonomy to identify this unknown fossil. When dealing with the question why more African Americans are incarcerated multiple theories are likely to be at play.
