  • ” I have seen patients at the urgent care I work at come in with sunburns that have mild blisters. It is extremely important to keep burns in a septic environment as this can cause further complications. (Saladin 2018)I remember when I was about 7 years old my uncle caught his leg on fire trying to shut off a cigarette he was smoking. His muscles and tendons were visible; my mother cleaned his wound about 3 times a day to prevent any infections along with antibiotics and stay hydrated .His third degree burn lacked pain because his nerve ending were damaged. This only occurs with third degree burns, which is why first and second degree burns are a lot more painful. It is important to be evaluated by a physician when burns are caused by chemicals or electricity, large and deep burns, or have burns that appear charred (mayo clinic).

Describe the composition and functions of saliva

Have you ever wonder what saliva is? You know when you smell your favorite food your mouth starts to water and you know that is saliva, but have you ever wonder what saliva is made up of or its function? Saliva believe it or not actually plays an important role in the mouth, “saliva moistens and cleanses the mouth, inhibits bacterial growth, dissolves molecules so they can stimulate the taste buds, digests a little starch and fat, and makes swallowing easier by binding the food particles into a soft mass and lubricating it with mucus. Saliva glands secrete 1.0 to 1.5 L of saliva per day” (Saladin, 2020 p.934). Saliva is made up of mostly water but there are other components the help make saliva. “Saliva is composed of a variety of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and phosphates. You can also find immunoglobulins, proteins, enzymes, mucins, and nitrogenous products, such as urea and ammonia in saliva” (Humphrey, RDH, MSEda, Williamson, DMDb). Saliva helps to wash away food debris (after we eat) and bacteria remaining in the mouth. Some examples of the function of saliva are to help with “chewing and swallowing, lubricating (moisturizes the inside of the mouth and creates smoother speech), solvent (dissolves food and allows the tongue to taste food), Antibacterial (lysozyme, peroxidase and lactoferrin fight against pathogenic microorganisms, pH buffering (prevents sudden changes in pH), and supplies minerals, including calcium and phosphorus, to teeth” (lion.co.jp). Did you know that “the salivation nuclei respond to a wide variety of stimuli like the feel of food in the mouth; the flavor of food sensed by the taste buds, olfactory receptors, and free nerve endings in the oral mucosa; and the aroma, sight, or thought of food even when food isn’t actually present in the mouth” (Saladin, 2020 p.935)?

My grandmother was the best cook I knew, I loved just about everything she made. When my grandmother was still alive, my sister and I would always go to her place for the holidays (as we did since we were children). The best thing about going to her place (besides seeing her) was the food. When you walked into her house the first thing you smelled was her cooking, and it was an instant mouth-watering smell.
