Module 1 Overview GTD 598: Humanitarian Relief and Development
This week, we will review the history and current status of development and relief industries, and how they have changed over time. This will provide a good background for the rest of the semester, and give us an idea of the way we got to where we are and the kinds of path dependency involved in the international aid system. We’ll look a little more closely at accountability, as one of the key principles. I’ve also added an article that came out just last week in the New Humanitarian to help orient us in terms of what some of the current debates are around the topic of linking humanitarian work and development.
By the end of this module, students will be able to:
1.Describe the historical trajectories and current mechanisms of both development assistance and humanitarian aid.
2.Understand how the field has changed over the past few decades.
3.Have an initial idea about the strands of debate around the intersection of humanitarian and development

How have the historical evolution of development and humanitarian aid influenced the conditions we deal with today?
What were the major shifts in that history? Do you agree with how the Davey et al. report chose to divide up the history?
4.Why did humanitarian aid and development end up separate sectors? Which actors drove that process?
This discussion requires two posts, an initial post and two response post. Later in the day will need to respond to two other posting. 100 words each so a total of 200 in responses to two other students. Total of 850- 950 words in discussion post, reference not included in the word counting. I will upload the required pdfs
