Advocacy Statement Presentation

without PowerPoint!

You will develop an advocacy statement to give voice to a vulnerable population in a region of the world outside of the continental United States that is experiencing a particularly high burden of disease (you choose which disease). The statement will be created as if you were preparing to testify at the United Nations or at a local government of your chosen region. Your statements should be persuasive and convincing. However, please use professional and academic language.

INSTRUCTIONS:

This 5-7 minute advocacy statement must be convincing, science-based, concise, and succinct. REMEMBER, this is not merely citing facts or statistics, rather it is a statement that aims to persuade an audience to take action. Your presentation should reflect this. If the majority of your statement is simply describing the issue, you will lose points. Make sure to have a focus on the course of action.

NOTE – some example videos are posted on Canvas. Listen to how these speakers form their argument and attempt to persuade their audience, yet still maintain a high level of professional language and demeanor. In other words, do not use phrases such as “you guys”.

The statement must include the following:

  • An introduction
  • A brief description of the population (e.g. children, elderly women, specific racial or ethnic groups, people living with a disability or in poverty, etc.) and why they are particularly vulnerable.
  • Describe the health burden — incidence, prevalence, mortality, DALYs, YPLLs (must include specific numbers/statistics!) — and any other relevant data (political factors, culture, etc.)
  • Describe, and advocate for, a specific course of action. In other words, what is it that you need your audience (UN members, local government, etc.) to do — the call to action.
  • A conclusion
