Preparedness, within the field of emergency management, can be defined as a state of readiness to respond to a disaster, crisis or any other type of emergency situation.  Preparedness is a theme that permeates all facets of the emergency management field, and most aspects of the emergency management profession.

Disasters can be natural or man-made. Natural disasters are floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Man-made disasters, on the other hand, are events like power outage, terrorism, and arson.  Disasters can strike families with no notice.
