The American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) both have ethical codes that address the use of assessments in the mental health field, along with addressing other areas pertaining to the treatment of and interaction with clients. The Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board (OCDPB) also has a Code of Ethics, as does every state. This is a necessary part of the mental health field since ethical issues will be individually interpreted if they are not defined by a governing body. With individuality in the field being high, clinicians need guidelines as to what is and is not ethical, thus generalizing how they respond to common situations.
