Details: Advocating for and Supporting Families of Children with Disabilities

As an early childhood administrator, you play an instrumental role in advocating for families of children with disabilities. As an advocate, you must fully understand and be able to apply the principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and build relationships with families and community professionals to provide support and assistance to families of children with disabilities.

Part 1: For Part 1 of the Discussion, discuss how children with disabilities may be able to receive services from a non-profit organization. Identify one organization and the service it provides to families of children with disabilities. Feel free to use the internet to search for non-profit organizations that support children and families with the name of a specific disability. Example of a possible search: “Non-profit organization and Autism” or “Non-profit organization and Cerebral Palsy”.

Part 2: For Part 2 of the Discussion, discuss the impact that a child with disabilities can have on a family. Consider social-emotional, physical, communication, adaptation, and economic challenges families of children with disabilities often face.

Part 3: For Part 3 of the Discussion, describe how you as an early childhood administrator will build relationships with families of children with disabilities in your early childhood program. Provide specific examples of family-partnership building strategies, events, and/or approaches you would use.
