A person is rational if he is efficient in whatever aims he happens to have at the present time:
examples: smoking cigarettes- as long as they follow the marginal cost\marginal benefit rule with prices and utility, smoking is rational if the the present aim is the feel good
others: driving too fast, overeating, skydiving, mountain climbing…..
Self interest broadly defined
Self-interest is not the same as selfish
someone else’ s well-being can increase your utility
examples:
parents and children
other relatives
close friends
most religions
charity
