Critical Analysis
The main article in David Sedaris’ article “Me Talk Pretty One Day” is for people to strive to excel no matter the obstacles. When trying to reach a new level of success in life, one should expect to face adversities, and utilize their strength and determination to fight through and achieve their goals. From the article, Sedaris explains that the French instructor was condescending and insulting in her teaching methods. The author explains that one day he attended class and found the teacher holding his class paper up above her head shouting, “Here’s proof that David is ignorant and uninspired ensigiejsokhjx” (Sedaris, 2010) It is required that teachers create a conducive learning environment to promote effective learning, but in this case, the French instructor does not create such an environment.
In learning institutions, the students expect an environment where they can interact with the teacher openly and learn in a conducive environment. However, as the author explains, taking his French class was such a nightmare. On the very first day of attending class, the teacher asked students to talk a little about themselves and went ahead to ridicule them with every comment they made. In one session, the teacher told the author that he hated him directly on his face. From the author description, it is evident he felt disliked and sensitive because he took the comments personally. In another incident, the French instructor poked the eye of a shy Korean woman and gave her an empty apology. The author describes the learning experience as spending time with a wild animal. From these actions, it is evident the environment was not conducive for learning, all because of the instructor’s teaching methods.
In conclusion, the story by David is a good example of bad teaching practice and the impact it may have on students. From the actions by the instructor, she inflicted fear among the students which distracted their learning process. It is essential for teachers to create a good learning environment to promote effective learning. An environment such as David’s class, was presented with fear, thus distracting effective learning.
