Diversity, You, and Society Powerpoint

Diversity, You, and Society Powerpoint

For the second part of the project, you will create a multimedia presentation that incorporates audio narration and visuals to articulate how critically analyzing your issue/event in diversity impacts your own framework of perception and ability to constructively engage in society.

Specifically, the following critical elements (which align to the critical elements required of the presentation in Final Project Part Two) must be addressed:

I. Issue/Event: For this section of your presentation, you will introduce the issue/event and how it relates to issues of diversity and any of the topics that have been discussed in the course.

  1. Using appropriate research strategies, describe a social or global issue/event that is related to issues of diversity. i. What is the origin of the issue? ii. What is the issue about?
  2. Using appropriate research strategies, describe the impact of the issue/event on society. i. Who is impacted by the issue?
ii. What is important to know about them?

C. Using relevant research or diverse perspectives, assess how society impacts the chosen issue.

  1. Yourself: This section of your presentation explores how studying diversity influences your individual framework of perception with respect to your discipline of study or profession.
    1. How has critically analyzing your issue/event in diversity informed your individual framework of perception? Consider how it has altered the way you perceive the world.
    2. How can critically analyzing diversity influence your field of study or profession? How can studying diversity inform your understanding of the next big topic of study in your field or profession in the next five to ten years?
  2. Society: This section of your presentation explores how studying diversity enhances your ability to engage constructively in society.
    1. How does critically analyzing diversity add value to how you interact with people and understand social or global issues/events? Supplement your reasoning with examples.
    2. Recommend strategies for using this kind of critical analysis for meeting your personal and professional goals. What might this look like in your everyday life? Consider how diversity can be used to address the day-to-day responsibilities or questions faced by practitioners in your field or discipline.
  3. Conclusion:
    1. Using relevant research or diverse perspectives, assess the benefits and challenges of addressing issues in diversity.
    2. Explain how critically analyzing diversity adds value to interactions with people in personal and professional contexts.
  4. Presentation: Throughout your presentation, you will be assessed on your ability to use effective communication skills to deliver your message to your audience.
    1. Construct your presentation in a way that ensures the audio and visual elements are logically organized in order to convey your message to your audience.
    2. Provide supporting evidence in your presentation that supports the importance of the chosen issue/event and its impact within diversity.
    3. Develop the audio narration to logically flow with the presentation to articulate the importance of critically analyzing the chosen issue/event and its impact within diversity.

Review the module resources.

Because the natural and applied sciences encompasses all aspects of the STEM disciplines, this module’s resources provide examples for how to use this lens to explore diversity. As you review the resources, consider:

  • How do the natural and applied sciences compare and contrast when it comes to diversity?
  • How does science augment your understanding of diversity?

I saw something in rubric about past reading and resources so just gonna add those just incase

The readings this week take a critical eye on the concept of intersectionality as a lens for understanding issues and identities relevant to the study of diversity. Intersectionality has gained a reputation for being “separatist and fragmenting” (Butler, 38), but, as these articles demonstrate, it can also be used more broadly to support a diverse, yet inclusive, society. As you read these articles, consider:

  • What is intersectionality, and how can it be used to better understand diversity?
  • How can the concept of intersectionality be applied to the issue or event you are choosing for Milestone One?
  • Do you agree or disagree with the authors’ application of the concept of intersectionality? Why or why not?

REQUIRED RESOURCES

While the readings this week are both American-focused and focused on specific aspects of diversity, they help illustrate how the lens of history can help us understand diversity and related issues. These readings also demonstrate the interconnectedness of the four lenses, as you will encounter facets of the other lenses in these articles. As you read this module’s selections, consider:

  • What are some key attributes of the historical lens, and what do they reveal about diversity?
  • How do historical events affect how we currently perceive diversity in the past?

The articles in this module’s readings represent a small sample of the broader conversations around representation, diversity, and the arts and media. As you read these articles, consider:

  • What is the impact of a lack of representation of diverse groups? How can these issues be addressed?
  • Take a look at your own preferred media. In what ways do you see similar or different trends from those described in the readings?

Video: Miss Representation (1:30:30)
This video examines how women are represented in American mainstream media and the cultural norms that influence women’s behaviors and feelings of self-worth.

This week you are working on a draft of Part Two of your Final Project – the multi-media presentation. This portion of your final project asks you to provide an overview of the issue of diversity you are analyzing for the portfolio – Part One of your Final Project. There are three parts to this presentation: 1) Issue, 2) You, and 3) Society. You should discuss the same issue you have been writing about in Milestones One and Two in this presentation. Then, for the second two parts, consider your issue and the study of diversity as a whole from the perspective of its impact and relevance to you and the larger society. These sections allow for a more personal reflection as well, compared to the analysis of your issue per the four lenses included in your portfolio. I highly encourage you to review the Milestone 3 grading rubric, provided in the Week 5 module, to help in developing your presentation.

The final presentation is a PowerPoint slide show which includes text and visual images as well as audio narration. Please note that you do not need to record the audio for this milestone, the draft of the presentation. For this draft assignment, you are asked to include the written speaker’s notes for me to review. Your speaker’s notes can be included in the slides using the “notes” function in PowerPoint or they can be submitted as a Word document with your presentation. Once you have feedback from this assignment, you will then record the audio narration for the final project submission in Week 7.
