THIS IS THE RESEARCH PAPER!

The Need to Have Equality in Schools and Colleges

Inequalities based on race and color has been a major challenge in most schools and colleges in many countries and specifically in the U. S. Despite many attempts to ensure that there is integration among races in public schools and colleges, there has been little progress made. The quality of education, especially in African American and Hispanic neighborhoods, is poorer compared to those of the Caucasian neighborhoods. The state of schools infrastructures and resources in the schools that are predominantly attended by these minority races are deplorable. The result is that the transition to college by African American, Hispanic and other minority students is very low compared to white students. This paper tries to highlight some of the inequalities in schools and colleges in the US and the need to have racial equality in schools so that the transition rate to colleges and universities

can improve.

The Need for Social Change and Equality in Our Education System

The society has placed on us many artificial barriers that have brought social differences and inequalities. We are often faced with restrictions and borders on our identities and minds and this often leads to us not being able to fully exploit our potential or capabilities. In order to achieve our true potentials as a people, we must be able to go beyond the temporary and artificial social barriers and bring about social changes that may bring about equality and ensure that every person has an equal chance in the society. Being able to bring about social change leads to a new social order whereby more and more people are empowered for a much better world to live in. It ensures that we step out of our comfort zones and avoid over reliance on the oppressive ways of doing things which may seem like the norm as defined by other people. Most times, the inequalities we see in the society are caused by unnecessary artificial boundaries in the society that have been created over time but which should not continue to see the light of day in the society today. This paper focuses on cultural diversity and racial inequality in schools and education in general as the main focus of social change (Green & Waldman, 2018). By having a more diverse education system, we are able to have a better and more prosperous society.

Racial Inequality in Schools and Colleges

Racial inequality in schools is still a major social issue in our country today. Unequal schools and segregation is still a common feature despite it being outlawed many years ago. The vision of having a more integrated and quality level of education seems to have been a difficult objective to achieve (Weir, 2016). In the landmark case of Brown vs. Board of Education, the aim was to ensure that there would be more integrated public schools offering quality education. Indeed in the years following the ruling, there were positive steps towards achieving these goals. However, the situation seems to have deteriorated as more and more public schools seem to be going in the opposite direction. The two main reasons are that there has been a steady decline of white students in public schools and the number of white births has also reduced significantly in the last several years (Norwood, 2017).

However, despite these challenges, we must continue with the fight to ensure that every child, irrespective of their color receive quality and affordable education. Without quality education, it becomes difficult to have equality in society. Unfortunately, the quality and equality of education in public schools has been on the decline. In fact, Native American,

American Indian, non-White Hispanic and African American Students have been the most disadvantaged compared to their Pacific Islanders and Caucasian students. Male African Americans are in particular the most disadvantaged and are at the bottom of the academic ladder (Weir, 2016). There are less male African American students who graduate from these schools compared with their Caucasian counterparts. In instances where they graduate, the literacy and performance levels of the Latinos and African Americans are much lower.

Also of interest are the allocations of resources in these schools. It is apparent that schools that are attended by Caucasian and Pacific Islander students have much better resources compared with the ones that are predominantly attended by the African American and Latino students. This shows that these schools are facing different experiences based on their racial compositions. For instance, schools that are predominantly attended by non-white Hispanic and African American students had the following characteristics in terms of resource allocations according to a study conducted in 2014 by the Department of Education (Norwood, 2017). First, the schools are less likely to offer gifted or advanced courses and even in instances where they are offered, these students are rarely recommended to take up those classes. Secondly, they had less experienced teachers and were less likely to offer Advanced Placement courses to its students. Thirdly, the teachers were found to be earning less money on average compared to their colleagues in the schools predominantly attended by Caucasian students. Fourth, the schools were generally old, poorly maintained with inadequate lighting, air conditioning, ventilation, and poor heating. Fifth, the schools were generally lacking essential facilities such as athletic fields, auditoriums, science laboratories, and other educational facilities. Finally, they were characterized by a few computers and other devices and they were of poorer quality with slow internet speeds (Norwood, 2017). It is clear that there are inequalities in the schools that are predominantly attended by the minority groups compared with those that are attended by the Caucasian and Pacific Islander students. These inequalities affect the integration in schools and also the quality of education that they receive. Ultimately these inequalities mean that very few of them are able to go to college and it then spirals to other sectors of their lives such as unemployment because without quality education your life is basically ruined.

The Image I Hope to Portray to The Readers

My contributions towards this topic were aimed at doing research and understanding the influence and the effects of racial inequality in schools. After doing a review of various online articles and researches that have been done, I hoped to create awareness on the negative effects of these approaches and their long term effects on our education system. My research focused on the effects of segregation and the state of our school resources on the quality of education especially on the minority groups such as the African American students (Mazama, 2015). I looked for relevant researches and articles related to this topic and the developments that have occurred to shed more light into why there should be a more balanced and equal approach to education for all for a more just society. By doing this research I was able to identify the gaps that exist that need to be addressed so that the education system all the way to colleges and universities is balanced and unbiased (Green & Waldman, 2018). I was able to come up with crucial information on the causes and the effects of the disparities that exist and hopefully be able to come up with possible solutions. My aim was to shade more light that disparities still exist in terms of race and they need to be addressed urgently for us to achieve any meaningful social changes in terms of education in society.

The Feeling I hoped to Elicit

The experiment and the research revealed a lot of important findings on the effects of these inequalities on the state of education. There is no doubt that inequalities negatively affect minority groups. The number of those who graduate from school or progress to colleges and levels of performance on the minority groups has been negatively affected (Norwood, 2017). Further, the issues that are associated with the racial divide have negatively affected the African American and other students from minority races in their pursuit for quality education (Green & Waldman, 2018). Some African American families

have even been forced to resort to homeschooling their children due to discrimination, racism and racial inequalities which exists in the schools (Mazama,2015).

At the end of the experiment, I hoped to create awareness on the state of affairs and urge the necessary people to take the necessary steps towards a more equitable system of education for all irrespective of race. We can all make a difference in pushing the concerned authorities to make things right. Our role begins by creating awareness and having the facts of these social inequalities in order to bring about social change in society.

Conclusion

It is clear that racial inequality is a major issue that affects our system of education and negatively affects the number of students from minority communities who transit to college. A lot needs to be done in order to achieve a more equal and integrated system of education for all. Quality of education for all means that we will have a more productive society. As things stand now, racial inequality is affecting our system of education, leading to poor performance and essential a hopeless society for our youth. Something must be done urgently.
