General Guidelines

The purpose of this research paper is to give you an opportunity to focus in depth on a developmental issue of personal interest. You may select from a list of topics I am providing. Evaluation will be based on your ability to relate course material to the focus of your paper and to thoroughly address the proposed questions for the research paper option of your choice. In other words, you must demonstrate what you have learned in class by using terms, theories, models, stages, etc. in your paper to illustrate your ideas, understanding of the material, and paper focus. A grading rubric will be used to evaluate your writing; this rubric is available to you on the handout containing the possible paper topics.

This is a formal paper that should be college level writing. Do not confuse it with a reflection essay or writing exercise. This means your paper should be thoughtful, organized with an introduction, body, and conclusion, and checked for spelling and grammar. This paper should be no shorter than 5 double-spaced typed pages (not including the title page and reference page) and no longer than 7 double-spaced typed pages with one-inch margins and 12-point font size. You will lose points if your paper is shorter than 5 pages. If possible, please use Microsoft Word. Word is preferable to PDF files, but if you cannot use Word, a PDF file is fine.

Since this is a formal research paper, the use of references is required. You should use your text and at least 4 other scholarly sources regardless of the option chosen. If you do not use references (as illustrated by lack of citations throughout the document and/or a missing reference page), I will not grade your work, and you will not earn credit on this assignment. The use of scholarly references is absolutely required.

This goes without saying, but just for the record, the paper you submit should be your own writing. At times students submit papers they have not written. As you know, this is called plagiarism, and it is not allowed. Or, students write some of the paper but copy some of the writing from the internet (or other sources) and paste that writing into their document without providing citations. Or, students use excessive quotes. In fact, you should essentially avoid quotations and be sure to use proper citations for paraphrased information from your references. I want and need to see your own writing! If needed, review the writing tutorial module for help with paraphrasing, citations, and tips for avoiding plagiarism.

You will be submitting your paper here in Canvas. If you need instructions for submitting your paper here in Canvas, see the following:

In terms of formatting and citation style, APA style is required. “APA” stands for American Psychological Association. APA style was covered in the writing tutorial module. If you do not know about this style, review the writing tutorial moduleand/or check out the websites listed below, which will give you information and guidance.

APA format does not generally include using first person, but you may use the word “I” in this paper and refer to your personal experiences, thoughts, feelings, etc. Furthermore, you do not need to include an abstract. But, please do follow the other features of APA format (e.g., parenthetical referencing or in-text citations, reference page, short title and page number on each page, 1-inch margins, etc.).

I have included a Word document below that is set up for APA style. All you need to do is use it to write your paper, and the title page, headings, margins, font type and size, etc. are all set up for you! The following are helpful resources which cover information about APA style.

Your research paper must be turned in on the due date (12/3/20 by 11:59pm, PST)or before. Please see your syllabus for information about late submission of assignments. Get your paper done on time, if not early, to avoid problems.

Download the resources in the table below! The first document will show you the various research paper topics. To be clear, you just choose one of the options to complete. Information about grading is located at the end of the document. The second document is important to read after you have carefully read all of the above information. The third document is the APA style Word template I mention above, and the fourth is a sample research paper from a previous student.
