Evaluate Indonesian social welfare through social indicators.

Discussion Response

Can you name the fourth most populous nation in the world?Did you know that the world’s largest Muslim nation is also a multi-party secular democracy? And that it sits at the crossroads of Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic history?

In what country can you find Borobodur, pictured below, which is the largest Buddhist Temple in the world? Did you know that world’s largest archipelago nation is comprised of over 17,000 islands? In fact the exact number of islands is disputed.

These islands are scattered between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, at the bottom of South East Asia. Indonesia is all this and more. It’s capital is the third largest megacity in the world (Jakarta; its larger urban area has more than 30 million people). It sits on the pacific ring of fire and has several active volcanoes.

It is a unique land of incredible diversity, and this module we will examine the social welfare of Indonesia.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • 5.1: Evaluate Indonesian social welfare through social indicators.
  • 5.2: Explain the role of Indonesian history and culture upon social welfare.
  • 5.3: Analyze Indonesian social welfare supports, policy, and social work.
  • 5.4: Illustrate the interconnections between Indonesian and global social welfare.
  • 5.5: Research social welfare and supports in a global context.

In this module, you have: 1 PowerPoint lecture to enjoy, 1 video to watch, and 1 article to read.

First, enjoy my PowerPoint presentation. It is a Profile of Social Welfare in Indonesia, similar to your assignment due in Module 7. I am presenting it you in this module so you will have an example that you can use to model your own Profile on. This is why you cannot use Indonesia for your Profile! In this lecture I am wearing a batik shirt, which is a famous kind of textile print from Indonesia.

Second, watch this brief video (2:11 minutes). It gives insight into the issues related to how economic growth and development can exacerbate inequality. It also gives you a look at Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PTMnCdpB5E&feature=emb_title

Finally, read this article. It is written by a professor of Social Development at the University of Gadja Mada in Yogyakarta, the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia. I have assigned it because it does a good job of expanding on the concept of “welfare states” (i.e. a governments’ social policies to promote social welfare) in the context of the Global South (most of the academic literature focuses on social policy in Europe and North America – hardly any is focused on countries in Africa, Asia, or South America). This article builds upon concepts from previous modules, such as GDP and Structural Adjustment Programs, but applies them to the specific context of Indonesia. It also introduces key concepts related to Indonesian history and social policy. In doing so, it shows how social welfare policy can build upon informal community patterns of care.

Reflect on this module’s readings and lecture videos. Respond to the following discussion prompts in a post of at least 650 words:

  • What is your main takeaway about Social Welfare in Indonesia? Recommend (at least) one thing that you learned about from Indonesia that you think the U.S. can learn from or should adopt? Why do you think this program or practice could be effective?
  • Would you enroll in a study abroad program for Indonesia in (for example, in the summer)? Why or why not?

This discussion requires two posts, an initial post and two response post. Later in the day will need to respond to two other posting. 100 words each so a total of 200 in responses to two other students. Total of 650- 750 words in discussion post, reference not included in the word counting. I will upload the required pdfs

Module 5: Self-Reflective Journal on a social policy or program

The purpose of this assignment is to take the next step in building your Profile of Social Welfare. Now that you have already chosen a country and researched its social indicators, it is time to start researching how the country is responding and influencing these social conditions. This means looking up a social policy or program in your country.

Through this assessment, you will: Evaluate Indonesian social welfare through social indicators (objective 5.1). Analyze Indonesian social welfare supports, policy, and social work (objective 5.3). Research social welfare and supports in a global context (objective 5.5).

Write a self-reflection that addresses the following prompts:

  • Research and describe a social welfare policy or program in your country. It could be related to child welfare, education, health care, poverty, mental health, older adults, people with disabilities, migrants and refugees – anything that you are interested in. In order to discover a suitable policy or program and learn enough about it to describe it, consult the following sources:
    • Your country’s government websites may have useful information [sometimes Google Translate can be used for websites].
    • The academic literature on your country. Login to the ASU library to access the Social Services Abstracts database that you can search with terms such as “Indonesia social policy” or “poverty policy Indonesia” (substitute your country’s name for Indonesia).
    • You can search google the same way to find reports from NGOs and other sources.
  • Compare that policy or program to one that you learned about in this module from Indonesia.
