Evaluating Content Area Literacy Materials and Assessments

Evaluating Content Area Literacy Materials and Assessments

Reviewing literacy materials is necessary to ensure they are a good fit for the students, standards, and lessons being taught. District-issued materials are sometimes out of date and teachers are left to find supplemental materials. Knowing how to assess the value of a resource will help to ensure proper alignment and appropriateness for the classroom.

Review literacy materials and assessments in your mentor teacher’s classroom. Ask your mentor teacher how he or she incorporates these materials and assessments into curriculum. Discuss with your mentor teacher the process of selecting content area literacy materials and how they are used to plan instruction and assessments, including modifications needed for individual students.

Based on your selections and the feedback from your mentor, write a 400-500 word reflection that addresses the following:

  • How the literacy skills are assessed. How is the suitability of various assessment types determined?
  • What kind of feedback do the teachers receive on students’ literacy skills as a result of the assessments? What kind of feedback do students receive on their performance of the literacy skills? How is this information used to guide future growth and development? What could be improved upon in the selection and use of assessments to further develop the literacy skills of the students?
  • How are the literacy materials selected? How are they reviewed for potential bias?
