Discussion (1A) Feeding and Eating Disorders

Adolescence is a time of transformation and growth physically, mentally, and biologically. In addition to the physical and hormonal changes, there are social mechanisms at work. In an effort to gain social acceptance or validation from their peers, many adolescents may take extreme measures, including avoiding eating, controlling the quantity and quality of the foods they eat, or binge eating. This can take a devastating toll on the individual as unhealthy weight control practices can lead to many biological, psychological, or social issues.

For this Discussion, you explore the phenomenon of feeding and eating disorders including the role that peer relationships play in the development of these disorders among adolescents. Additionally, you identify approaches you might find useful in addressing the issue.

Discussion (1b) : Applying Research to Practice

Refugees and immigrants are one group experiencing constant change due to sociopolitical events impacting global populations. Thus, social workers need to seek additional understanding and awareness of global issues as new groups may enter the United States, hence, the need for evidence-based practice.Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a process that integrates the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and client values and preferences. When engaging in evidence-based practice, a social worker will consider culture as one of the variables when asking a practice-related question and searching the literature. Social workers then evaluate research methodology in terms of sample representativeness. If the sample of the research study does not match the social identities of your clientele, the research may not be as applicable. Finally, social workers consider the cultural values and preferences of their clients when choosing whether or not to implement an intervention. For this Assignment, you begin engaging with the evidence-based practice process by researching an article that may help inform intervention strategies with a specific cultural group. To prepare: Find a peer-reviewed article in the Walden Library that focuses on immigrants or refugees. • Discuss how the information presented in your colleague’s article may or may not apply based on a refugee’s or immigrant’s country of origin, class, color, gender, ability status, sexual orientation, or religion.
