Essay Questions

Midterms/Final Exams: These exams are essay answers – think of them as bluebook exams taken on-line. As such, I expect you to give me well-reasoned and thoughtful essays. Since you may use your textbook and I give you study guides, I will expect answers that are more substantive than those I get from students who do not have that benefit. DO NOT COPY FROM THE TEXT – THAT IS PLAGIARISM! If you cite information from the text, credit the author. These are worth 50 points each.

  1. Explain in detail how the three perspectives (functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist) analyze culture (make sure to give examples to support your discussion). Explain ethnocentrism and cultural relativism; how is cultural relativism useful to the study of society? Are there any limitations to the use of cultural relativism (e.g. do you think that there might be times when we shouldn’t use it) and why or why not? In your opinion, have the various social media been good or bad for society and why? (chapter 3)
  2. Define role strain and role conflict and give a general example of each. Discuss how you experience both role conflict and role strain in your life; be sure to give at least two examples of role conflict and one of role strain. Explain how you have resolved at least one instance of role conflict and one of role strain. Explain ascribed status, achieved status and master status. Discuss your own ascribed, achieved and master statuses. Pick two groups that you are a part of and discuss your status in these groups (e.g. ascribed, achieved, master) and how that status influences your behavior in these two groups. (Chapter 4)
  3. Explain the functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist perspectives’ approach to the study of society and discuss the advantages and critiques of each perspective. What is the sociological imagination? How can this concept be useful to the study of society? Finally, discuss the work of Emile Durkheim, Max Weber and Karl Marx in detail. (Chapter 1)
  4. Explain how the three perspectives (functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist) analyze socialization. Explain how George Ritzer’s concept of McDonaldization and discuss whether or not you agree with him – why or why not? Make sure to give examples to support your opinion. Discuss one primary group and one secondary group in your life and explain several positive things that you get from being in each group and several potentially negative things that you experience from time to time in each group. (Remember: no group is perfect.) How has each group shaped or influenced who you are today? Why? (Chapter 5)
  5. Explain socialization and discuss the agents of socialization. Explain in detail both Cooley’s Looking-glass Self Theory and Mead’s Theory. Do you believe that these theories help to explain the development of your own self-identity? Why or why not? Finally, which of the agents of socialization (as discussed above) currently have the most influence on you? Is that different from when you were in elementary school? Why do you think that today’s influence is or is not different from when you were younger? (chapter 4)
