The article addresses some of the failures in the public health that have been experienced in the past and how negligence led to this failure. In Topol’s article “Failing the public health” provides insight information of what happened with rofecoxib. Merck was approved market rofecoxib commonly known as Vioxx by the Food and Administration (FDA) little did they know that this was going to affect the general public. The drug-exposed its users to the excessive risk of myocardial infarctions and strokes (Topol, 2004). These effects were noted, and the company was forced to withdraw the drug from the market as it affected many patients. It is estimated that over 80 million patients had used the drug meaning that the effect was massive and this was one of the most significant prescription-drug withdrawal in the medical history. This was a failure by the trusted organization that is supposed to protect and safeguarded the public health. Both FDA and Merck did not fulfill its responsibilities of protecting the public. The trail of the drug involved over 8076 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and the drug was approved since it proved to be useful in the first place. One year after commercial approval it was noted that the drug did not meet the requirements………..
