If you are a behavioral health professional coming from a clinical or other client-facing role, you may be accustomed to a more scientific/clinical style of communication rather than communication for program advocacy and leadership. The latter, advocacy communication, is the mode you will likely need to use to communicate with stakeholders across the spectrum, from clients and community members to board members and funders. In practice, this means you will need to carefully plan the communication strategy for your program, streamlining and coordinating your messaging so that it persuades others to buy in.
For this Discussion, you will create a communications plan for your selected Harbor City Behavioral Health Center (HCBHC) initiative (either opioid abuse/recovery or elder care). As you consider your messaging for the program, keep in mind the following questions:
To prepare for this Discussion:
Create a communications plan for the new HCBHC initiative. Use the guide in this week’s Learning Resources.
With these thoughts in mind:
Why do you want to communicate with the community? (What’s your purpose?)
To whom do you want to communicate it? (Who’s your audience?)
What do you want to communicate? (What’s your message?)
How do you want to communicate your message? (What communication channels will you use?)
Whom should you contact and what should you do in order to use those channels? (How will you actually distribute your message?)
When should you communicate your message and how often?
Question 2 Starting a new organization or program requires a vision for what leaders want it to accomplish. Typically, decisions must be made about how to build the product, service, or program; how to market it; and how to hire or allocate staff and volunteers to implement the program. Leaders often formalize these ideas for their program or organization in a business plan, which can then be used to obtain financing or win buy-in to start the program.

In other cases, an existing organization may want to create a “road map” for the future of the business. Leaders want a better vision for where the company is going, and their original thinking from their business plan may need adjustment. They might think about new products, services, or programs they could build or new markets into which they could expand. Leaders of organizations think about all of these questions and formalize their ideas in a strategic plan. The strategic plan will guide the organization’s overall direction for the next 3–5 years.

In this Discussion, you will explore the difference between business planning and strategic planning, including why alignment is essential to the effectiveness and sustainability of the organization.
