Abortion is a moral and social issue that was very controversial especially in the early part of the 20th century and before in the United States of America and other western countries. Therefore, it took courage for an author to write about it. Hills Like White Elephants is among the few articles that explored the sensitive topic of abortion at the time when people shied away. In Hills Like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses two main characters to explore the volatile topic without showing bias to any side of the debate. The author explores the social and emotional implications of abortion. In Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway presents a conversation between a man that he calls The American and a lady or a girl that the author calls Jig. In the conversation, the characters discuss a dilemma of whether or not to acquire an abortion, even though the author does not use the word abortion in the short story.
