INTRODUCTION

Every organization has a mission and vision that drive its actions in conducting business. For the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the vision “to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards.” To support this vision, the DHS has three concepts that form the basis for its strategic plan—security, resilience, and customs and exchange. Within the DHS, there are four primary areas of responsibility:

  • Border security and transportation.
  • Emergency preparedness and response.
  • Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear countermeasures.
  • Intelligence analysis and infrastructure protection. (Department of Homeland Security, n.d.)

INSTRUCTIONS

In your main post:

  • Explore two methods of communication you, as a police administrator, would recommend to police officers in reaching out to the community about the primary areas of focus for the DHS.
  • Articulate how you, as a police administrator, would connect and communicate with the community to forge a partnership in combating two of the four primary areas of responsibility within the DHS.
  • Describe an approach that could be effective in connecting with the community on sensitive homeland security issues in that community from the perspective of departmental leadership.

The competencies addressed in this discussion are supported by discussion objectives, as follows:

  • Competency 1: Utilize police communication principles in community relations.
    • Explore methods of communication police officers may use in reaching out to the community about the primary areas of focus for the DHS.
    • Articulate how a police administrator could communicate with the community to combat border security and transportation; emergency preparedness and response; chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear countermeasures; or intelligence analysis and infrastructure protection.
    • Describe an effective approach for a criminal justice professional to connect with the community on sensitive homeland security issues.
