Hospital acquired infections also known as nosocomial are illnesses that patients acquire while in hospital for other reasons. These illnesses are usually caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses that come from the hospital environment, other patients, or hospital practitioners. Since nurses are the ones who come in contact with patients at their bedsides, they have a core responsibility of preventing patients from acquiring HAIs. Through evidence-based practice and research, nurses can utilize their skills to improve patient care standards through education.
