Overview
Communication is a process of sending and receiving verbal and nonverbal messages. In relationships the communication process is an important element in starting, developing, maintaining, and/or terminating the connection between people. The atmosphere around the relationship can be described as the communication environment
. This chapter examines selected elements that affect the communication environment. It provides guidelines for how to improve the communication environment.
To be aware means to focus attention on the present moment. Awareness of the communication environments helps to enhance the quality of communication.

What is the Communication Environment?
It’s important to understand the communication among humans takes place on the planet earth
. “The earth is alive,” the writer Michael B. Beckwith proclaims in a lecture on Fear and Anxiety. Since the earth is alive, it has the potential to influence all life. Humans are dependent on the earth for life. As this dependence continues, humans then affect the earth, often not in positive ways, by its activities to sustain life.
The educator Scott David explains this relationship in the following quotation:
“If we look towards the Ancient World, consider the role of the mountains as well as the sea in shaping the polis civilization of Ancient Greece. As a second example, consider Ancient Egypt, which historically stretched along the Nile River Delta. Consider the issue of geographic barriers and natural boundaries, and how their presence (or non-presence) have impacted the frequencies of invasions and migrations between different geographical regions. From the Ancient World all the way through to the present, the environment has been critical in shaping human culture.”

Variables Influencing the Communication Environment
Physical Environment
The environment itself, weather, temperature, location, are all factors that affect how people feel and behave. Depending on your body temperature, you might operate better on cool days than hot days. When an individual connects with the environment life moves much easier. If it’s freezing cold, and a person does not have warm clothes, it’s difficult to feel comfortable.
Lack of comfort in the physical body influences how one interacts with others. It is clear from the Coronavirus that people’s health influences the world. The worldwide death toll is more than 500,000 people. There are 10 million cases reported cases according to Yahoo News UK. (June 29, 2020) The worldwide effort to wash hands, wear masks, shelter in place, are all factors that influence where people are able to physically be present. The closing of businesses, schools, and government agencies, have all had the impact of limiting access to physical spaces. More people in the world have turned their attention inward than any other time in modern history.
Culture
The way people live, eat, work, play, dance, paint, speak, hear, touch, taste, dress, smell, touch, are all a part of the culture results in the unique characteristics of groups of people. Individuals who represent the culture bring into relationships, aspects of their personality as well as their cultural background.
Communication Style
