- How would you describe the relationship between Oedipus and the people of Thebes as the play begins? What kind of ruler has Oedipus been? What is his perception of himself as king?
- Discuss the changing attitudes of the chorus in the play. Why is the accusation against Oedipus so terrifying to them? What dilemma does the accusation pose for them?
- Explain Oedipus’ behavior toward Tiresias, Creon and Iocaste. Contrast Iocaste’s skepticism with Oedipus’ insistence on knowing the truth. Explain why Oedipus insists on hearing what he must know will be horrifying news. (Point out examples of irony in the dialogue.)
- Discuss the degree to which Oedipus is triumphant at the end of the play. Does Oedipus maintain his position as savior and father to his people? What kind of father does he appear to be to his daughters? Discuss whether he retains his nobility and dignity in his fall.
