I am going to be discussing edema and the cause and effect of it. Edema is when swelling occurs becuase of fluid trapped in a person’s tissues. Edema can happen anywhere in the body, however it typically affects your legs, feet, and ankles (Mayo Clinic, 2017). The most common symtom of edema can be best describe as puffiness of the tissue. Whether it is you legs or arm, your tissue is swollen. You can press down on your skin and see where you pressed. Similar to when you push down on memory foam. This is called pitting (Mayo Clinic, 2017). Your skin can also appear shiny. You may also experience pain when walking if you have edema on your legs or difficulty breathing if edema is occurring in your lungs. Untreated edema could also lead to infections, complications with your veins and arteries, and scarring (Mayo Clinic, 2017). There are different types of edema. A few being peripheral edema; edema of legs, feet, ankles and sometimes arms which could signify you have an issue with your circulatory system, pedal edema; edema of legs and ankles which is most common is pregnancy, lymphedema; edema of arms and legs which could mean damage to your lymph nodes, and pulmonary edema; edema to the lungs when fluid is collected (WedMD, 2020). There are many causes for edema. Being overweight, being stationary for long periods of time, salty foods are main reasons. Edema could also happen due to side effects from anti inflammatory medications, high blood pressure medications, estrogen, and Chemotherapy (Mayo Clinic, 2017). There could also be underlying resons for edema, such as kidney disease, lymphatic system issues, cirrhosis, allergies, an obstruction of flow, for example, a blood clot, and congestive heart failure (Mayo Clinic, 2017).

CRITICAL THINKING

I am sure you have heard pregnant women complain of swollen feet and ankles. Their shoes do not fit and they have to elevate their feet. This is an example of edema. This usually occurs in the third trimester and resolves on its own after birth. An example of life threatening edema is edema of the brain. Known as cerebral edema. This is common seen on a CT or MRI. It must be treated quickly or you could damage and kill brain cells. It is caused by strokes, trauma or infections (WebMd, 2020).
