ANALYZING STEREOTYPES

Culture is a small word that carries a lot of meaning. Unfortunately, the word is often conflated with other terms and misused. Most often, the terms culturerace, and ethnicity are used interchangeably although they are actually three distinct concepts that have some overlap. In this unit, you will learn about the differences among race, ethnicity, and culture.

In the units to come, you will be reviewing various isms, including sexism, heterosexism, anti-Semitism, and racism. However, before delving into those specific concepts, you will review the overarching “social phenomena that fuel them” (Carter, 2015, p. 28). Your text indicates that bias, prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes maintain the presence of isms in our social environment. In this discussion, you will discuss stereotypes and how they affect people. You will also create a research proposal aimed at studying stereotypes.

INSTRUCTIONS

For this discussion:

  • Identify two stereotypes, each related to a different cultural group within Hays’s ADDRESSING Model. For example, you may identify a gender-based stereotype and a stereotype based on a different culture.
  • Compare and contrast the stereotypes and their effects on the subjects of the stereotypes.

Next, describe a design for a research study related to your specialization that investigates stereotypes. You may investigate anything related to stereotypes, such as the emotional impact of stereotyping on Asian Americans.

  • Explain, briefly, what your research study plans to investigate and why it is important.
    • What ethical standards apply to your research?
    • How will you recruit participants?
    • What types of research biases will you want to avoid in your study?

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words.

Question Two

THE HARMFUL EFFECT OF UNCONSCIOUS BIAS

Human beings are imperfect creatures. Our upbringings, social histories, and past experiences create and shape our biases. To avoid being biased is to try to avoid being human. Even when we believe our biases to be positive, they can be harmful to others.

Unconscious biases are hidden to the person with the bias; he or she cannot address a problem without awareness that the problem exists. In this discussion, you will analyze the harmful effects of unconscious biases on three different types of culture: race and ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.

INSTRUCTIONS

In your initial post to this discussion:

  • Describe a typical work scenario based on your psychology specialization. For example, if your specialization is clinical psychology, a typical work situation may be providing therapy to a group of low-income pregnant mothers. Make sure that your scenario includes a person of a different race and ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation from your own.
    • How might you unknowingly convey prejudice, bias, and discrimination in that situation?
    • How do power and privilege factor into the situation you described?
    • What do you need to do to avoid this kind of situation as much as possible?

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words.

Question Three

RESEARCHING STEREOTYPES

Stereotypes, like bias, are a social phenomenon that fuels isms. Every culture has stereotypes.

Part of understanding stereotypes more deeply requires us to answer such questions as “How are stereotypes formed?” “What attitudes, beliefs, or experiences maintain stereotypes?” and “How are stereotypes changed?” That is where research comes in. Unfortunately, it is hard to research a topic when research participants do not want to admit that they hold stereotypes, let alone use them to make life decisions.

In this discussion, you will address religious stereotypes and create a research study that investigates those stereotypes within a religious culture of your choice. Finally, you will evaluate how cultural and research biases will affect your study.

INSTRUCTIONS

Your initial post will have two parts. First, complete the following:

  • Identify two stereotypes about a specific religion or faith.
  • Compare and contrast the stereotypes and their effects on the subjects of the stereotypes.

Next, describe a design for a research study related to your specialization that investigates an issue related to a stereotype or is counter to a stereotype. You may investigate anything related to the faith or religion, and stereotypes. For example, if you were a chemical dependency counselor, you might investigate alcoholism in Jewish Americans.

  • Explain, briefly, what your research study plans to investigate and why this is important.
  • Articulate the cultural biases that may surface in your research and how you will manage or avoid them.
  • Explain how will you recruit participants.
  • Discern the types of research biases you will want to avoid in the study.

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words.

Question Four

APPLYING THE ETHICS CODE

For this discussion, review the first two Case Study Scenario media pieces linked in Resources.

  1. After reviewing Case Study Scenario 1: Multiculturalism (file attached), respond to the following:
    • What ethical and legal concerns are raised in this scenario?
      • Identify the applicable ethical standards.
    • Which ethical principles is the chair violating?
    • What are the pros and cons of teaching the class?
      • Support your observations with scholarly sources.
  2. After reviewing Case Study Scenario 2 (file attached), respond to the following:
    • What are two additional ethical or legal issues related to the scenario?
      • In light of the new ethical concerns, propose a solution.

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words. Remember to cite the sources you use to support your initial posts and responses.

Question five

ETHICS AND HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH

Research in psychology is paramount to the field; it is through research that evidence is gathered. Section 2: Competence, of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2014) states that it is expected that psychologists understand and know the research in their fields, with particular attention paid to evidence-based interventions.

There is a long history of unethical research that this competency attempts to address. It is easy for researchers to engage in behaviors with potentially serious consequences; stringent ethical compliance is maintained through institutional review boards (also known as human subjects review).

For this discussion, complete the following

  • Review the Dan Markingson case linked in Resources.
  • Describe the primary ethical guidelines that may apply to this case and explain why.
  • Use Fisher’s six-step decision-making model from Chapter 3 of Decoding the Ethics Code: A Practical Guide and identify a possible solution using at least two ethical theories to support your process.

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words.

Question six

MAKING DIFFICULT ETHICAL DECISIONS

Karen, a Latina lesbian, decided to come out to her family and classmates when she started her second year in her psychology doctoral program. Now that she could be her “true self” around her family and friends, she expected things to be easier. However, several people—including her parents and four siblings—are not as accepting of her as she had hoped. As a result, she struggles to keep up with schoolwork, is tearful during class, and becomes upset while in conferences with professors. Her faculty members are talking about requiring her to start psychological treatment for these issues and are even considering removing her from the program.

For this discussion, respond to the following:

  • What does “The Code” say about the suggestions of the faculty?
  • What are the cultural implications of doing what they are suggesting?
  • How does Fisher’s ethical decision-making model, discussed in Chapter 3 of Decoding the Ethics Code: A Practical Guide, apply to this situation?
  • How should Karen’s situation be handled?

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words.

Question Seven

NAVIGATING REAL-LIFE ETHICAL AND MULTICULTURAL ISSUES

As we discussed at the beginning of the course, while there are numerous dimensions of diversity, Hays’s ADDRESSING model provides a useful framework for educators, counselors, and psychologists to examine their own cultural influences, potential biases, and perspectives, and develop a plan to address the impact of these elements on their work with others.

In your course text, Decoding the Ethics Code, Fisher presents ethical and legal issues of which psychologists and future psychologists like yourself must be cognizant. Additionally, there are several ethical theories presented to help you understand how to begin considering these risky issues.

Your final course discussion offers one more opportunity for you to think critically about how multicultural, legal, and ethical issues intersect and intertwine. Review the media piece, Problem Based Scenario (linked in Resources – file attached), and then respond to the following:

  • What are the ethical issues in this situation?
    • Specify which codes impact this scenario.
  • What are the multicultural concerns?
  • What are the legal issues?

Cite appropriate scholarly research to support your findings; refer to the links in Resources as you prepare your initial post and responses.

Your initial discussion post should be at least 200 words.
