identify which theoretical perspective will be the center of the theoretical discussion and the aspect (or aspects) of the great power competition that will serve as the basis for the theoretical exercise.

ANALYTIC ESSAY

Instructions:

The essay must adhere to the following four-part format and structure.

(1) An introduction to the essay where the student must identify which theoretical perspective will be the center of the theoretical discussion and the aspect (or aspects) of the great power competition that will serve as the basis for the theoretical exercise. (about 200-250 words) (Examples: Structural realism, classical realism, liberalism, Neo-liberalism, marxism, critical theory, constructivism, feminism, post structuralism, post colonialism, or normative international relations theory)

(2) The second part should clarify the empirical or historical aspect(s) that will serve as the test case of the theoretical exercise. This part should assume that the readers know the history, so do not spend too much space on this part. Simply discuss the major strokes or historical elements. (about 300- 350 words)

(3) The third part must problematize the choice of the two competing or complementary theoretical positions for the analysis. Here the student must clearly identify why the choice, how are they competing or complementary, and what are the benefits and/or shortcomings of the theoretical comparison for a fruitful analysis. (about 700-800 words)

(4) This final part is sort of the concluding portion where the student discusses the findings of the analysis, clearly identifying how (and why) the theoretical positions fair or perform with respect to the chosen empirical case or topic of the trilateral great power competition. (about 300-400 words)

Prompt:

  • On the bases of the theoretical positions that you have learned in this course, take two competing or complementary theoretical positions and discuss how these may and may not be useful to make sense of the current systemic or global great power competition among China, Russia, and the United States.
  • For example, you can focus your essay on one of the following dimensions of the competition: (a) security and spheres of influence; (b) economic expansion in peripheral areas of the global south; (c) competition in weapon sales to the entire world; (d) competition in political forums like UN, WTO, World Bank; (e) influence in regions close to their shores like the South China Sea and Pacific Basin for China, Central Europe for Russia, and the Western Hemisphere for the U.S.A. Students can also identify their preferred areas in this rivalry such migration, natural resources, environmental respect, pollution, curtailment of CO2, problems of the commons, markets in the global south, health services, like epidemics and pandemics.
  • Also add:
  • The theoretical positions are Structural realism, classical realism, liberalism, Neo-liberalism, marxism, critical theory, constructivism, feminism, post structuralism, post colonialism, or normative international relations theory. I have gone ahead and attached a document explaining them all.
