In this Discussion, you will find a research study that used a measurement instrument and analyze its use in the study, the relationships between the instrument(s) and the population(s)

Your Topic: Hot Topics: Measures, Scales, Instruments

Assignment Details: As a researcher, you will need to know what measurement instruments to administer. (The terms measures, scales, and instruments are used interchangeably to refer to measurement instruments such as surveys, tests, questionnaires, etc.) You will also need to become familiar and comfortable with the measurement instruments that others choose to measure data. Understanding measurement instruments will also help clarify how you might potentially employ these instruments in your doctoral study.

In this Discussion, you will find a research study that used a measurement instrument and analyze its use in the study, the relationships between the instrument(s) and the population(s), and the concepts of reliability and validity as they pertain to measurement instruments.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Lesson 37, “Internal Consistency and Estimates of Reliability” in the Green and Salkind text. Review in particular how to report psychometric properties, including correlation coefficients (pp. 296–298).
Read Chapters 3, “The Theory of Measurement” in the Trochim and Donnelly text.
Go to Walden University Library to search for and identify an example of a test and an example of a scale. For each example, determine the typical population and evaluate the reliability and validity.

To search for pre-existing measures that are available in the public domain, you may search the Walden University Library:
Log in to the Walden University Library and then follow the steps to find an article. Note that most measurement development is conducted in the field of psychology. Make sure that you select peer-reviewed and full-text articles. You will also want to conduct an advanced search as multiple terms will be searched.
In the first box, type in your construct (depression, leadership, etc.).
In the second box, type in the word “psychometric.”
In the third box, type in one of the following words (you may have to try a few different ones): “measure,” “instrument,” “scale,” or “survey.”
Note: The Mental Measurements Yearbook is available and is also a useful tool. This database offers reviews of pre-existing measures in the field of psychology. However, nearly all measures are copyrighted, meaning you would have to pay to use them. Using a public measure allows you the opportunity to view the measure without purchasing it such as in the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements: http://www.unl.edu/buros/bimm/html/00testscomplete.html

Post a 200- to 400-word evaluation of the reliability and validity properties of the selected measurement instruments you sourced (one test and one scale). Analyze the ways the author(s) tried to ensure that the scale and test are reliable and valid for their population. Consider if and how you might use these measurement instruments in a research study such as your doctoral study. Why or why not?

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the reading(s) and/or media segment(s) and use APA format.
