Information Literacy Assignment

Information Literacy Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to learn about information literacy by exploring the concept of peer review. You may be familiar with peer review in prior writing courses, but what does it mean when you talk about peer review in relation to academic source material? Click on the following link to a DeVry University Library presentation of Peer Reviewed Journals: The Creation of New Knowledge. http://library.devry.edu/pdfs/Peer_Review_PPT.pdf The PDF presentation contains 20 slides that will introduce the peer review cycle.

After reviewing the presentation, compose a 2-paragraph response in which you address each of the following points:

  • In your own words, identify points in the peer review cycle that seem especially important and explain why.
  • How does an editor differ from a peer reviewer? Use at least two points to support your response.
  • Based on this information, explain whether your article for this week was peer reviewed? How can you determine this information?
  • As you work on your research in this class, where specifically can you look to find peer-reviewed information?

The journal publishes the article which will inform, enlighten, and prompt new ideas…
The Researcher submits her/ his manuscript to a journal ž The editor reviews for: — Content — Creativity — Clarity — Contribution to the knowledge of the field ž If the editor likes it…
It gets sent to other experts to review
The Peer Reviewers
ž Look to see what is new about the research ž Determine if the methodology is sound ž Decide if the conclusions are supported ž Verify that this is a contribution to the field

The Peer Reviewers
ž Don’t know who wrote the manuscript ž Are not known to the author of the manuscript ž Hence, this is often called a “blind” review ž It is also called a refereed process
The Referees/Reviewers:
ž May recommend it be published as is

ž Often suggest rewriting and revising

ž May not like it at all— -Journals typically reject more articles than they accept -Prestigious journals may have a 90% rejection rate or higher

The Editor:
ž Ultimately decides what will and will not be published. ž Works with the author to see the work through to completion ž May be a full-time professional or professor taking on the responsibility
Criticisms of the Peer-Review Process: žTime consuming žLimited number of experts žMay suppress dissident points of view

The Peer Review Process
ž Spots errors or weaknesses prior to publication ž Ensures articles are substantial and unique ž Is considered crucial in establishing the validity of research.

preview of the answer..

The peer review cycle is defined as the cycle that the researcher goes through to ensure that their area of research is validated and after which the document goes through the scholars for the review of the information that is researched. The reviewers ensure that the research paper meets the guidelines that are in place for proper vetting to be done on importance and the quality of the research. A difference exists between peer review and the editorial process where the specialists in the field of research look at the submitted paper while in editorial review; journalists are the ones that examine documents and not the scholars (Upadhye, 2007). Editors are involved in the process of identifying the suitability of the paper while the peer reviewers look at the soundness of the work from scientific point of the research process
