Interview and Analysis

Interview and Analysis

Application: Interview and Analysis  (Assignment)

In this week’s Learning Resources, Stephen Brookfield explains that the focus of adult education should be on the adult learners’ experience. Adult learning is not a thing; it is a process. As adults we have experiences that inform our beliefs and understandings and which we bring with us to any learning event. We also self-reflect on these experiences. We integrate new understandings based on our reflection, and we change our actions accordingly. Adult learning is a lifelong, iterative process of discovery in which we continually add to, update, and revise our understandings of ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Keeping this perspective in mind, for this week’s Application you will do the following:

  • Identify an adult you know who is in the process of a (formal or informal) learning experience.
  • Interview this person about their learning process and take detailed notes.
  • Analyze the results of your interview.
  • Report your findings.

Use the following questions to guide you during the interview. Please ask other questions of your own as you see fit.

  • What is your name, age, occupation, etc.? (Be sure to protect the identity of your interviewee. No identifying information should be used.)
  • Describe the context or setting of your learning.
  • Is it formal or informal learning? Why do you think this?
  • Why have you chosen to learn? What is your motivation? What are you trying to change?
  • Describe your learning experience so far.
  • What are some successes you’ve had?
  • What have been the biggest challenges or barriers to your learning?
  • What opportunities does this learning experience present you with?
  • Do you see this learning as part of a lifelong process of personal growth? Why or why not?

Once you have collected your interview data, analyze your findings and present them in a 2-page paper. Be sure to conduct your analysis within the context of Stephen Brookfield’s conception of adult learning as a lifelong, experiential process.
